Potatoes - Chlorosis
Symptoms
Symptoms begin with yellowing in intercostal areas at the base of leaflets or leaf margin. The chlorosis expands to the whole leaf as the deficiency continues. The margin often remains green.
Eventually necrotic patches appear in the yellow areas which terminate as intercostal leaf scorch.
Symptoms are most severe in the oldest leaves, which have green veins and large areas of marginal and intercostal necrosis.
Reasons
Severe magnesium deficiency.
Manganese deficiency is similar but here intercostal yellowing starts on younger leaves and the necrosis is usually in spots along the line of the veins.

Eventually necrotic patches appear in the yellow areas which terminate as intercostal leaf scorch. The leaf margins roll up and begin to crumble.

Potatoes - Chlorosis
Symptoms
Symptoms start with yellow mottling in intercostal areas of the leaf, often at the base of leaflets or leaf margin. The chlorosis expands to the whole leaf as the deficiency continues.
Symptoms are most severe in the oldest leaves.
Reasons
Beginning magnesium deficiency.
Manganese deficiency looks similar but here intercostal yellowing usually starts on younger leaves.
Magnesium deficiency made worse by
- Sandy soils
- Acidic soils
- Potassium rich soils
- Soils receiving high potash applications
- Cold wet periods
Magnesium is important for
- Boosts bulking
- Increased yield of tubers
- Improved disease resistance and skin quality
- Increased tuber dry matter content and starch levels
