Cabbage - Growth retardation
Symptoms
Affected plants show stunted growth and a faint yellowgreen leaf color.
Deficiency symptoms are more intense during cold, wet weather.
Reasons
Zinc deficiency
In acid, sandy soils with high rainfall, zinc can be leached. On the other hand, Zn is also less available in soils which are highly limed or contain low organic matter.
Zinc deficiency made worse by
- Organic soils
- High pH soils
- Soils rich in phosphorus
- Soils receiving high phosphorus application
- Cold wet conditions
Zinc is important for
- Structural and functional element of many enzymes
- Important for internode elongation and photosynthesis
- Increases sugar and Vitamin C contents
- Higher stress tolerance
