Broccoli - Discolouration
Symptoms
Plants show red discoloration on the edges of older leaves, with a yellowgreen transition zone. Leaf size is not affected.
Reasons
Phosphorus deficiency (right)
Phosphorus is important during early growth, especially for root development. However, deficiency is rarely seen as brassicas are efficient in extracting P from soil. Undersupply is often connected with cold soils and drought.
Broccoli is more sensitive to P deficiency than cauliflower, cabbage and brussel sprouts.

Broccoli - Growth retardation
Symptoms
Plants show red discoloration on the edges of older leaves, with a yellowgreen transition zone. With severe P deficiency leaf size and plant growth are stunted.

Broccoli - Discolouration
Symptoms
Starting from the leaf margins, affected plants show red discoloration on older foliage. With severe P deficiency leaf size and plant growth are stunted.

Phosphorus deficiency vs. healthy plant made worse by
- Acidic or very alkaline (calcareaus) soils
- Low organic matter
- Cold or wet conditions
- Crops with a poorly developed root system
- Soils with low P reserves
- Soils with a high phosphate capacity
- Iron rich soils
Phosphorus is important for
- Early growth, especially for root development
- Increases vigor in shorter season crops especially in adverse conditions
- Improves marketable yield
